Prostate health is a major concern for all men as we grow older. One out of every seven men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime, and as many as half of all men will experience some form of symptoms as a result of an enlarged prostate (BPH). Diet is considered one of the major contributors to prostate cancer. It’s typically linked to over-consumption of red meat or diets high in fat, which can cause creation of excess testosterone. However, you can also make smart choices with what you do eat to help maintain a healthy prostate. Try to incorporate these fruits into your weekly diet to improve the overall health of your prostate.
Watermelon: Watermelon is a good source of lycopene, an antioxidant linked with treatment and prevention of cancer. Red watermelon even has a higher concentration of lycopene than tomatoes.
Grapes: Grapes and grape juice are rich sources of resveratrol, a type of natural phytochemical that belongs to a larger group of phytochemicals called polyphenols that possess potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties
Apples: Are a good source of fiber, vitamin C and contain quercetin, a flavonoid that shows both antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
Grapefruit: This pink colored citrus fruit is ranked amongst the highest for antioxidants and contains the phytonutrients liminoid, which inhibits tumors, and naringenin, which repairs DNA in human prostate cancer cells.
Pomegranates: Pomegranates have a long list of health-boosting benefits. Pomegranates are also noted for being high in antioxidants and a nutrient called ellagitannin, which especially promotes prostate health. Some studies have shown that pomegranates can even slow the reproduction of prostate cancer cells and can even kill them off.
Berries: (raspberries and blueberries) Are an excellent source of vitamins C and K, manganese and a good source of fiber. Blueberries are among the fruits highest in antioxidant power because of the many phytochemicals they contain.
